We are at the summit of Mauna Kea, the tallest point in all of Polynesia. The air is thin. And we are looking down on and over pu'u, volcanic cones, and across the vast Pacific. The planet seems to be revolving away from us, as clouds race toward us, accumulating on the side of Mauna Kea. Yes, we can see weather forming below us.
Raised at the sea and now living in the desert, Mateo doesn't live in a three-dimensional world but in a world of color, light, and movement. And in a world of sudden, unexpected shifts -- from lovely and tranquil to dangerously beautiful. Mateo begins his paintings by setting the mood, primarily through color, especially the foundation color. Brush stroke by brush stroke, by following the movement in the landscape, and by adding detail and texture, his canvases begin to breathe. Sometimes subtle and quiet, other times bold and even threatening, they seem to take on a life of their own. Always brimming with energy and feeling.

What a treat to find your portfolio! I love the way that this piece takes landscape beyond representation and into the realm of story and narrative l/f
ArtStudio Mateo replied:
Thanks so much. You are looking down on and over pu'u (volcanic cones) from the top of Mauna Kea, the tallest point (and I dare say the most sacred site) in all of Polynesia. You can feel the planet revolving away from you, and the clouds racing toward you. Weather is forming below you. The air is extremely thin. So glad you like this painting.
ArtStudio Mateo replied:
Marsha, Really LOVE your desert landscapes. Spectacular deployment of colors. WOW!!!
